It features scrollable and resizable windows, graphics, varied text styles and fonts, and full printing capability. The stand- alone files are self-executing applications which you may distribute to others to read and print. No other application is required! This gives you the ability to distribute documents and information widely with no knowledge of the end- users Mac configuration or software. With DOCMaker you may create up to 60 separate, 32K chapters within each document. Every chapter may contain up to 60 graphics. You may name every chapter uniquely; it will appear in the Contents menu. You may add a table of contents and a find feature for the readers to quickly jump to selected sections. Each chapter may print separately. DOCMaker itself, will open any TEXT file or existing DOCMaker document. DOCMaker will also open and convert Apples TeachText files for saving as stand-alone documents. Hot Pictures act like buttons within the documents for accomplishing such things as playing sounds, showing QuickTime movies, and jumping to other applications. Files may be added to a document by using the Append File feature so that your existing documentation may be merged into a single stand-alone document. DOCMaker uses the Claris XTND importing standard to import styled text >From applications such as MicroSoft Word and MacWrite. DOCMaker also takes full advantage of text styles including fonts, faces (bold, italics, underline, shadow and outline) and specified colors for those so equipped. You may define text styles by name and use them when you need. And when youre done, you may add a customized About My Product... menu and dialog to the final stand-alone document. DOCMaker is a great way to distribute information on disks, networks and bulletin board services. There are very few shareware products of the caliber of this one still available, and this one is just $25! If the contents of any of these folders ever change, Folder Watcher will respond by showing an alert, playing a system beep or a custom sound, writing to a log file, executing an AppleScript script, or any combination of these. Unlike other similar utilities, Folder Watcher: * Does not patch any traps so it is more compatible with your other programs. * Allows you to keep an eye on an infinite number of folders. * Does not require a reboot after adding new folders and will work between reboots. * Does not require that the target folder is empty (ie: some other utilities alert you whenever an item is placed in an empty folder but then never again as long as a single item is in the folder! yech!) * Uses very little RAM. Folder Watcher requires System 7. Although it does not require a network, it is most useful when used on one. Folder Watcher is 32 bit clean and is 68040 compatible. AppleScript 1.1 is recommended but not required. I got a few responses right away, then a few more a week later, then another group several days later, and the most recent was yesterday.) Thanks very much to Scott Turner, ABRODY ("Don't Panic!"), Al Bloom, Bill Rausch, Thomas Scott, Scott Hinckley, and Juan M. Courcoul! Here's what they taught me: My desktop data base file had become, in the words of one of them, "bodaciously confused." It turns out the most practical thing to do at that point is punt; get rid of the data base file and let the operating system create a fresh one from scratch. Al Bloom mailed me a little utility called "TechTool 1.0.3" that does exactly that--it erases the desktop data base file and restarts the Mac. As the finder comes up, it creates a new desktop data base file. One of the INFO-MAC postings mentioned that TechTool is (was) avail- able at sumex: info-mac/cfg/tech-tool-102.hqx . I don't have access to sumex here, so I don't know if there is (will be) a ...-103.hqx there. One respondent emphasized the importance of release 1.0.3 of TechTool--it leaves alone the portion of PRAM it isn't supposed to touch if you ask it to zap PRAM. TechTool is freeware, and comes from the people who bring you MacEKG. It worked fine for me; the only "interesting" adventure was that it refused to delete the data base file while any "applications" were active, and TechTool's definition of an "application" includes print monitors. So I had to drag "HP PrintMonitor" out of my "extensions" folder and restart; certainly not a problem. A couple of respondents explained that this problem happens fairly easily when applications and their documents are on different drives. That wasn't my problem (I have only the internal hard disk) but my first steps at solving my problem (just move the application to a different folder and back) are, according to those folks, also the way to fix the multi-drive version of this "lost linkage": Just force the operating system to pay a bit of attention to the application and the desktop data base file gets updated so the app can again be found. One person who has multiple drives (I really envy you guys) said that he has the best luck using a two-step process: First, rebuild the desktop for all drives. Then, go back and rebuild the desktop for the boot drive only. Hmmm. I didn't validate this, but I received a warning that the rebuild process can run out of memory if you have a godawful number of files. Apparently this can occur with no explicit warning; all you see is funky behavior like I observed. My Mac has 20 meg, so I didn't worry about this; his solution was turning on virtual memory. Sounds like an eminently practical solution--since you might as well step out for coffee while your desktop rebuilds anyway, what's a little extra paging I/O? I received several cautions to *never* *ever* interrupt a desktop rebuild. That wasn't the cause of my problem either, but certainly that's good advice in any event. Thanks again for all the help and advice, and I hope no one is miffed at my delay in posting this summary. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Mar 1994 13:13:04 -0600 From: courcoul@itesmcq1.qro.itesm.mx (Juan M. One last bit of advice: according to several sources and my personal experience, periodic reconstruction of the desktop is a GOOD THING to do, especially if you are actively uploading/downloading and generally maintaining your drive's directory in a constant state of flux... ;) A rebuild on a monthly basis was an oft-quoted recommended period, but your mileage may vary. Thus: Dear Eric, I read your piece in Info-Mac about using scanners in image analysis to inspect sheet goods. There are lots of things to know about in this field. Let me start by giving some references which I think you should have on your professional shelf if you are going to be doing this type of work for an extended period of time. [1] Castleman KR, Digital Image Processing, Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 1979. [2] Gonzalez RC and Woods RE, Digital Image Processing, Addison-Wesley, Reading, Massachusetts, 1992. [3] Oppenheim AV, Willsky AS, and Young IT, Systems and Signals, Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 1983. [4] Young IT, Sampling density and quantitative microscopy, Analytical and Quantitative Cytology and Histology, 10(4), 1988, 269-275. [5] Young IT, Image Fidelity: Characterizing the Imaging Transfer Function, in Fluorescence Microscopy of Living Cells in Culture: Quantitative Fluorescence Microscopy - Imaging and Spectroscopy (Taylor DL and Wang YL, Ed.), pp. 1-45, Academic Press, San Diego, 1989. The first two are good, general textbooks on image processing. I have (as you may surmise) been involved in the last three. Reference 3 is a general (undergraduate) textbook for getting into the sampling and filtering problem. The last two are specifically directed towards questions in image analysis. Of course there are hundreds of books and thousands of articles, but these five should get you started. Now as to the question of using the scanner for the sheet goods: I assume that the specimen illumination can be suitably arranged so that there is enough light without any induced shading (non-uniformity DUE TO ILLUMINATION). The fundamental issue then becomes one of sampling density versus resolution. Many people cofuse these two. The sampling density refers to the number of pixels that are sampled per linear distance (inch, cm, whatever). The resolution refers to the ability of the optics and electronics (working together) to be able to resolve fine detail. In general one should oversample! That is, take more pixels/inch than can actually be resolved by the electro-optics. (See reference 4 above.) 2400 dpi translates to about 960 pixels/cm = 96 pixels/mm or 10 microns/pixel. The optics may or may not have this resolution capability; you will need a resolution test chart or accurate specs from the manufacturer to check this out. Your microscope has a sampling density of probably 1 micron/pixel if the physical dimension of the CCD elements are about 25 by 25 microns. If you have the new, smaller CCD photoelements that are about 11 by 11 microns then the sampling density will be about 0.4 micon/pixel = (11 microns / 25 magnification). I assume that all the microscope tube factors are "in order". The RESOLUTION, however, will almost certainly be fixed by the microscope optics and (approximately) given by the Rayleigh formula (0.61 * L/NA) where L is the wavelength of light that you are using and NA is the numerical aperture of the microscope lens. Typical values in microscopy are L = 0.5 microns (green light) and NA = 0.4 (typical 25x lens) for a resolution of 0.76 microns. According to the Nyquist theorem (references 1,3,5 above) the sampling density should be less than half the resolution or 0.76/2 = 0.38 microns/pixel. Explanation of what the Nyquist theorem is and how it is used in microscopy are discussed extensively in references 1 and 5 above. You should also check that the pixels are square - not the camera pixels but the final pixels in the computer memory. The easiest way to do this is to make a two-dimensional ruler using MacDraw and a LaserWriter. Make a series of lines in both direction that are 0.5 cm apart over a distance of, say, 5 cm. Now scan that 2-D ruler with either the CCD camera or the flatbed scanner. The lines in the HORIZONTAL direction should have an average spacing in pixels/cm that is equal to the line spacing in the VERTICAL direction (to, say, within 1%). There are many more issues that should be addressed if the goal is accurate measurement for image analysis - photometric accuracy of the sensor, geometric distortions, noise levels, and software systems for professional image analysis (as opposed to desktop publishing or "toe-in-the-water" image analysis). Keep in touch. I tried Apple HD SC Utility, vers. 7.2, and it only allows CV> me to create a combination of Mac/Unix partitions, but not just two CV> Mac partitions. Or did I miss something? No Carlo, you didn't. Despite the fact that Apple now routinely sells Macs with large hard drives (in excess of 500MB) and the Mac HFS is lousy with its block sizes on large drives, the wizards at Apple haven't understood that most users with large hard drives want multiple HFS partitions. The current Apple disk formatting software simply doesn't support multiple HFS partitions. This is made even more critical since the new Macs AVs have the capability for much higher SCSI transfer rates. Third party partitioning software like Silverlining aren't able (currently) to deal with this. Obviously, this is a bad situation. (I still have trouble understanding why Apple doesn't cooperate better with third party partitioning software vendors, or improve their own formatting software.) There is a solution. If you are not using a newer Mac, then LaCie's Silverlining will do a fine job partitioning your drive. The LCIII should work just fine with Silverlining. I was asked via email what I meant by "Mac serial port limitations"; the answer got long enough that I'm posting it. What I'm referring to is the fact that the Mac serial connector has only one modem control connection available. A simple computer-modem connection has a data line each way, two modem control lines, and three modem status lines. The Mac connector provides only one modem control output and one or two modem status inputs (depending on how recent your Mac is, apparently). The use of the modem control lines has evolved over the years, but in our context (computer talking to async modem), DTR (Data Terminal Ready) is typically used to hang up the modem, and RTS (Request To Send) is used for hardware flow control (handshake). Hardware flow control simply means that when the Mac has received as much data as it can handle it turns off RTS to signal the modem to stop sending data. After it catches its breath, it turns RTS back on and the modem resumes. There's a modem status line, CTS (Clear To Send) that the modem uses in the same way. The problem is that, since Mac has but one modem control output, you can control DTR or RTS but not both. A good modem cable (like Paul Celestin's) connects Mac's modem control output (DIN pin 1) to both DTR and RTS at the modem end. Then you (the user) must decide, typically for each piece of comm software, how to set things up. Some comm software gives you no choice. MacPPP and MacSLIP (and probably the other PPPs & SLIPs) *require* hardware flow control. So you must tell your modem to use hardware flow control *and* to ignore DTR. Other comm software (MacCIM) doesn't want any modem flow control at all; it wants to handle everything itself. There are lots of other considerations: software flow control (xon/xoff), enabling compression or error correction, speeds, etc, but I'll cut this, if not short, at least not much longer. The bottom line on flow control is to 1) know your cable, 2) know your comm software (even more difficult than it sounds), 3) make sure your modem and comm software agree on what's in use, and 4) don't use DTR for hangup and RTS for flow control at the same time. A gripe for the record: most comm software vendors try to simplify matters by supplying a list of modems; picking the modem supposedly sets everything up the best way. This would be dandy if the list contained *all* modems and the setup were correct in every case. Given the traffic on this subject on the net, this goal is not achieved. I'd like to request the vendors of all modem-oriented software to include a statement on what their software *needs* and *wants* in the way of flow control, DTR usage, compression, error correction, etc. That way anyone capable of reading a modem manual can manage the setup himself. A note on FirstClass: FC will let you specify both hardware flow control and DTR hangup. In fact, some of their supplied modem configurations have both selected. I don't know how this can possibly work in a Mac environment. If a FC representative is reading this, some clarification would be appreciated (I'm looking at FC Client 2.0.9). /Jonathan Lundell (jlundell@opus.com). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Mar 1994 07:05:23 -0800 (PST) From: John Thoo Subject: HP 500C vs. Cannon 600 (C) On 08 Mar 94 Pete Tamas wrote: > Someone asked me whether the Cannon 600 was a better buy than an HP > 550C. Apple indicates a maximum of 10000 times. By that time you will probably have a megadot-per-inch successor to your faithful old LW II NT, I hope. Re 2. The memory is one of the entries on the Startup Page that you just stopped printing! As the memory of the LW II NT is fixed, it will always tell you that the memory is 2 MB. If you want to know the fraction that is available for downloading fonts, go to the Chooser and select LaserWriter 8. Click "Setup.." followed by "Printer Info". Besides giving you the Installed Total Memory of 2 MB it will show the currently free Virtual Memory (which at the printer's startup should be around 400 kB, but which changes with downloaded fonts and default paper size). Here again you can download a little PS program that will dump the status of the virtual memory to a Logfile. The program goes like this: statusdict begin vmstatus stack end Re 3. If it could be done (like in the LW II NTX), it would be as easy as installing memory in your Mac IIsi. Too bad, however, it's impossible! You bargained for 2 MB and that's it! If anybody reading this doesn't agree and managed to hack an extra MB or two on this board, I'd like to hear it! I just tried v2.7 (new last week) of the dpi software, and it crashes the AV, too. NEC's only help is to put hardware adaptors on the monitor cable, which they promise will allow the monitor and AV Mac to work together nicely. I'm told the DOS Compatible card will work fine but I haven't heard Apple's official stand on this. Along with complexity comes quality and of course price. Based on you message, I am not quite sure what level of production you are refering to. The basic problem lies in converting your computer image(in RGB format) to an acceptable video format(NTSC). You need hardware for this. It comes in many varities/features and prices. These boards are commonly referred to as "frame buffers". Two of the most common desires: 1) Output the computer screen to tape, real-time This is usually used to record presentation(Macrmind Director, Persuasion, etc..) . For this relatively "low quality" project, there are a bunch of frame buffers available. Off the top of my head is the L-TV, and quite a few others. I hesitate recommending any. The best thing to do is to actually evaluate them. In this setup, you simply run a pair of RCA jacks from your computer to you VCR and hit record, whatever appears on the screen will be recorded. 2) Option 2 - expensive, but much more versatile. Being able to put computer images on video tape frame by frame. This will allow you to put single computer images as well as animations(quicktime) on tape. There a couple of important points to bring up here. The quality of the rame-buffer is important as well as the type of video tape. In the latter case, VHS is not nearly high enough quality. S-VHS is closer, but HI-8 and betacam is the only way to go. Unfortunately, the price is outrageous for these "professional" decks. $8000+ new. The frame buffer I recommend is the Video Vision. High quality output and also allows for full screen video digitizing. Another good card if the Digital Film card. The third component of this wonderful package is some hardware/software that can control the deck. We use Diaquests DQ-Animaq. Probably the most expensive, but also one of the best on the market. I can't really adress alternatives since I have not investigated them. If you are looking more toward option 1, you might want to consider using 8mm viseo, smaller more convient and a little higher quality. Another issue that I haven't mentioned is audio, to you plan on having audio as well?? Are you looking to over graphics on top of live video?? Well, I'll stop rambeling, as you can probably guess, I love this stuff. If you have any question/comments/snide remarks, please feel free to let me know. If I haven't answered your question directly, feel free to ask again.
